Dr. Brian Thomas is a Lecturer in Hydrogeology at the University of College London's Department of Earth Sciences. His research focuses on understanding human impacts on the hydrologic cycle, particularly through integrating remote sensing, subsurface geology, and watershed geomorphology. He investigates how anthropogenic and climatic changes affect water availability at local to global scales, with an emphasis on groundwater sustainability.
Thomas holds a BSc in Environmental Geology (1997, University of North Dakota), MSc in Hydrology (2002, University of New Hampshire), and PhD in Civil Engineering (2012, Tufts University). Before academia, he worked as a Senior Hydrogeologist at Weston & Sampson Engineers and an Environmental Scientist at the U.S. EPA. His postdoctoral work expanded his expertise in subsurface storage dynamics using remote sensing techniques.
His research explores topics such as groundwater-surface water interactions, GRACE satellite data applications, and climate-driven water storage changes. He teaches courses GEOL0027 (Groundwater Science) and GEOL0058 (Matlab in Hydrogeology) at UCL. His work addresses critical questions about water security and adaptive management strategies in regions facing water stress.
