Brian Smith is a Professor and Director of the Optical Memory and Quantum (OMQ) group in the Department of Physics at the University of Oregon. His research focuses on quantum optics, quantum information science, and advanced optics technologies. He leads initiatives in quantum networks, entangled photon systems, and applications in precision imaging and astronomy.
Education: BA in Physics and Mathematics from Gustavus Adolphus College (2000); PhD in Physics from the University of Oregon (2007). His work spans theoretical and experimental domains, including quantum entanglement distribution, interferometric imaging, and photonics engineering.
Key projects include the ASPEN-Net (Attosecond Synchronized Photonic Entanglement Network) and advancements in quantum-enhanced telescopy. He collaborates on grants such as NQVL: QSTD, focusing on quantum communication and metrology. His research addresses challenges in multiplexing, noise mitigation, and astronomical imaging at microarcsecond resolution.
Smith’s lab develops cutting-edge tools like temporal mode sorters and electro-optic systems for quantum light manipulation. He explores applications in glaciology through diffuse optics and leads efforts in quantum network tomography and photonics-based quantum walks.
