Paul G Kwiat

Paul G Kwiat is a distinguished Professor and John Bardeen Chair in Physics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with The Grainger College of Engineering and the Department of Physics. He holds dual roles as a faculty member and founding Director of the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST). His research focuses on quantum optics, quantum information systems, and photonic quantum technologies, including entangled photon sources, quantum computing architectures, and hyper-entanglement applications.

He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from UC Berkeley (1993), followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Innsbruck and Los Alamos National Laboratory. His honors include Fellowships from the Optical Society of America and American Physical Society, and the LANL Fellows Prize (1998). Notable contributions include pioneering work on quantum interrogation, quantum erasure, and optical implementations of quantum protocols.

His research group actively explores quantum communication protocols (e.g., teleportation, superdense coding) and quantum computing via cluster-state paradigms. Recent projects include drone-based quantum key distribution, space applications of quantum networks, and attosecond-scale quantum metrology.

Key achievements include developing high-efficiency single-photon sources, hyper-entangled photon pairs, and founding IQUIST in 2018 to advance quantum science education and collaboration across disciplines. His work bridges foundational quantum mechanics with applied technologies like quantum cryptography and quantum-enhanced imaging.
