Brian Richardson is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Maryland’s College of Arts & Humanities, with an affiliate appointment in American Studies. His research focuses on international modernism, postmodernism, narrative theory, and the history of the novel. He has authored seven books, edited twelve essay collections, and published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters. Key works include Unnatural Narrative (2015), which redefined antirealist narrative theory, and Narrative Theory: Core Concepts and Critical Debates (2012), a collaborative foundational text.
Richardson’s theoretical contributions span unnatural narratology, plot poetics, and reader-response analysis. He has held visiting positions at institutions worldwide, including the University of Tübingen and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Awards include the Perkins Prize (2005) and a Choice Outstanding Academic Title (2012).
