Brian N. Dominy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Clemson University's College of Science and currently serves as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Engagement and Curriculum Development in the Division of Undergraduate Learning. He joined Clemson in 2005 after completing his Ph.D. at The Scripps Research Institute and a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University.
Education:
- B.S., Computational Biology, Carnegie Mellon University
- Ph.D., Biophysical Chemistry, The Scripps Research Institute
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Biophysical Chemistry, Harvard University
Research Interests: Dr. Dominy's work integrates computational modeling and biophysical chemistry to study biomolecular function and evolution. His group develops molecular mechanics and bioinformatics tools to investigate classical information transfer in biological systems, with applications in drug design and antimicrobial resistance. His NSF CAREER award (2010) specifically recognized his innovations in modeling physio-chemical drivers of biomolecular evolution.
Awards and Honors:
- Veteran Impact Award (2024)
- Executive Committee, Conference of Southern Graduate Schools (2022)
- Outstanding Advisor Award in Chemistry (2021)
- College of Science Student Advocate Award (2017)
- Board of Trustees Faculty Excellence Award (2011)
- NSF CAREER Award (2010-2015)
- Clemson University Research Grant (2007)
Academic Service: He has mentored 10 doctoral and 3 master's graduates. His extensive administrative contributions include directing undergraduate studies in Chemistry (2011-2016), serving as Interim Associate Dean for the College of Science (2016-2018), and leading academic policy in Clemson's Graduate School (2018-2024).
