Brian Mustanski is a Professor at Northwestern University with appointments in Medical Social Sciences (Implementation Science), Medicine (Infectious Diseases), Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. He serves as Director of the Impact Institute, Associate Vice President for Social and Behavioral Research, Director of the NIH-funded Third Coast Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), and Co-Director of the NIH-funded HIV Implementation Science Coordination Initiative (ISCI).
Dr. Mustanski's research focuses on the health and development of LGBTQ youth and the application of new media and technology to sexual health promotion and HIV prevention. His work spans several key areas:
- HIV prevention and treatment among sexual and gender minority populations
- Digital health interventions for sexual health promotion
- Mental health and substance use among LGBTQ+ individuals
- Health disparities and equity for sexual and gender minority communities
- Implementation science for evidence-based interventions
Dr. Mustanski has been Principal Investigator of over $70 million in federal and foundation grants and has published over 375 journal articles in leading publications including Science, American Journal of Public Health, Implementation Science, AIDS, and Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. His research has significantly advanced understanding of LGBTQ health, HIV/AIDS, and related fields.
Dr. Mustanski has received numerous honors including being named to Clarivate's Most Highly Cited Researchers list and the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contribution to LGBT Psychology from the American Psychological Association. In 2023, he was appointed to the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health.
As a leader in his field, Dr. Mustanski serves on multiple advisory boards and has held leadership positions including President of the International Academy of Sex Researchers. He leads several active clinical trials including 'Keep It Up! 3.0,' a pragmatic trial of strategies for implementing an eHealth HIV prevention program that has been proven effective by the CDC.
