Brian Laub serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology, Health, and the Environment at the University of Texas at San Antonio's College of Sciences. His research bridges freshwater ecology, fisheries science, and watershed management with practical applications for river restoration and urban water systems.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Stream Ecology from the University of Maryland
- B.S. in Wildlife Biology (Aquatic Emphasis) from the University of Montana
Dr. Laub's research examines how aquatic organisms interact with physical environments across life cycles, particularly focusing on human impacts through urban development and water management. His lab investigates desert river systems facing flow alterations, habitat loss, and water quality degradation, while developing restoration strategies for self-sustaining ecosystems. Current projects analyze urban stormwater impacts across San Antonio's watershed gradients, Cibolo Creek's response to development, and Rio Grande conservation in collaboration with federal agencies.
As director of the Laub Lab, he mentors 7 active graduate students and has guided 6 former students to degree completion. His work informs landscape management for aquatic biodiversity conservation through partnerships with the National Park Service, Utah State University, and local water authorities.
The Laub Lab maintains field capabilities for hydrologic monitoring, water quality analysis, and community ecology studies across Texas ecosystems, with particular expertise in intermittent streams and urban-rural watershed comparisons.
