Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. is the 18th President of St. John’s University and holds a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Toronto. He previously served as president of Providence College for 15 years where he improved campus facilities, hired new faculty, and diversified the student body. His research focuses on medieval philosophy with specializations in Thomas Aquinas, metaphysics, and ethics.
His publications explore philosophical traditions and theological foundations of medieval thought, with recent works examining divine nature and Thomistic philosophy. He teaches ethics courses while leading institutional planning committees focused on strategic development.
Shanley serves on the Board of Directors for both the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities and the BIG EAST Conference.
