Dr. Brian Grunau is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine. He serves as an Emergency Physician at St. Paul's Hospital and holds multiple leadership positions including Co-director of the BC Resuscitation Research Collaborative (RESURECT), Resuscitation Innovation Lead for the BC Emergency Medicine Network, and Medical Research Consultant for BC Emergency Health Services.
- Doctor of Medicine, University of Manitoba
- Residency Training, UBC
- Masters of Health Sciences (MHSc), UBC School of Population and Public Health (2014-2016)
Dr. Grunau's research primarily focuses on improving outcomes from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), with special expertise in extracorporeal CPR (ECPR), resuscitation science, and opioid-related emergencies. His work spans clinical research, system implementation, and translational medicine to bridge the gap between research findings and clinical practice. He has developed innovative approaches to cardiac arrest management including the BC Cardiac Arrest Registry and provincial ECPR programs.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on optimizing cardiac arrest detection, improving resuscitation techniques, and addressing the opioid crisis through evidence-based interventions. The research shows increasing sophistication in methodology, with growing emphasis on simulation modeling, geospatial analysis, and international consensus building to address critical evidence gaps in resuscitation science.
- AHA Young Investigator Award
- Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research funding recipient
- Contributor to international ELSO ECPR guidelines
- Author of chapters in Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine and other authoritative texts
Dr. Grunau has secured over $6 million in research funding, including a $2.2 million national project examining COVID-related occupational risks among paramedics. He actively mentors through his leadership roles in RESURECT and serves as a scientific content expert for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. His work with the Canadian Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium shapes national cardiac arrest research priorities.
He leads the BC Resuscitation Research Collaborative (RESURECT), which maintains a provincial Cardiac Arrest Registry and develops innovative OHCA interventions. His research group collaborates with the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHÉOS) and Providence Health Care Research Institute, creating a robust ecosystem for emergency medicine research translation.
