Dr. Brian Garvey is a Lecturer in the Politics, Philosophy and Religion department at Lancaster University. His research critically examines philosophical questions emerging from psychological disciplines, including psychoanalysis, evolutionary psychology, and social psychology's Situationist Thesis. He holds a PhD in philosophy from Trinity College Dublin and previously held a Government of Ireland Post-doctoral Research Fellowship (2002–2004).
Education: B.A. in Philosophy and Politics, and M.A. in Philosophy from University College Dublin; PhD in Philosophy from Trinity College Dublin (thesis topic: Freud's Psychoanalysis of Religion).
Research interests span analytic philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, philosophy of biology, and the history of mid-20th-century analytic philosophy, with focus on L. Susan Stebbing, Gilbert Ryle, and J.L. Austin. He recently edited J.L. Austin on Language for Palgrave-Macmillan's Philosophers in Depth series.
Publications reflect interdisciplinary engagement, with his 2025 article Scenes and Sensibilia in the International Journal of Philosophical Studies exemplifying his work at the intersection of perception and metaphysics.
