Dr. Ashley Shaw is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science at the University of Leeds. From August 2025, she will assume the role of Assistant Professor in Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin. She earned her PhD from University College London (UCL) in 2019. Her research focuses on motivation in rational agents, particularly exploring desire, practical rationality, and self-knowledge. Shaw’s work bridges philosophy of mind, action, and language, engaging interdisciplinary insights from linguistics and psychology.
Key research interests include the nature of desire, the role of consciousness in self-knowledge, and the relationship between desires and rational action. She has published on topics such as need theory, slurs in language, and the necessity of ‘need’ in ethical frameworks. Her forthcoming monograph, ‘Desire and Practical Rationality,’ further develops her theoretical contributions.
Award recognition includes the 2024 Joint Essay Prize from the University of Antwerp’s Centre for Philosophical Psychology. Shaw has taught courses on ethics, philosophy of language, and logic at UCL, University College Dublin, and the University of Leeds. Her current research projects include collaborations on harm theory, affective desires, and the content of intention.
