Brian David Metzger is a full Professor of Physics at Columbia University, where he has held a faculty position since 2013 after completing a NASA Einstein Postdoctoral Fellowship at Princeton University. His research fundamentally advances theoretical high energy astrophysics with emphasis on gravitational wave sources and electromagnetic counterparts.
His academic credentials include:
- B.S. in Physics, University of Iowa
- Ph.D. in Physics, University of California, Berkeley (2009)
Metzger's research spans multi-messenger astronomy, specializing in gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, neutron star mergers, nucleosynthesis (origin of elements), tidal disruption events, and fast radio bursts. His theoretical frameworks are critical for interpreting LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave detections through electromagnetic signatures like kilonovae, revolutionizing our understanding of cosmic explosions and heavy element formation.
Major recognitions include:
- New Horizons Breakthrough Prize in Physics
- Bruno Rossi Prize (American Astronomical Society)
- Blavatnik National Award for Young Scientists (2020)
- Sloan Research Fellowship
- Simons Investigator award
His research is continuously funded through elite mechanisms including the Simons Foundation Investigator program and previously NASA's Einstein Fellowship. Metzger teaches core physics courses such as Astrophysics I, Electromagnetic Waves & Optics, and Mathematical Methods of Physics, training next-generation astrophysicists at Columbia.
