Brian Connor is a Lecturer of Sociology at the University of Maryland and Director of the Sociology BA/MA 5-year program. He specializes in Cultural Sociology, Social Theory, and Political Sociology, focusing on privacy perceptions in state and corporate contexts. His teaching spans courses like Sociological Theory and Privacy and Surveillance.
Connor holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2014), an MA from the same institution, and a BA from Tulane University.
His research explores moral discourses around surveillance and privatized punishment systems. Recent work analyzes how different actors (governments/corporations) impact privacy norms. He has published extensively on Durkheimian theory, digital culture dynamics, and political sociology frameworks.
Connor has received the 2023 Provost’s Excellence Award for Professional Track Faculty and serves as a Lead Faculty Fellow for University Honors (2024-2026). His scholarship bridges classical social theory with contemporary issues in digital surveillance and penal systems.
