Dr Brian Beach is a Senior Research Fellow in Social Policy & Gerontology at University College London (UCL) and holds a concurrent position at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. His research focuses on aging policy intersections, including work-retirement transitions, cognitive health, and disability policy analysis. Beach has dual affiliations: at UCL’s Department of Epidemiology & Public Health since 2021, and at Karolinska’s Division of Insurance Medicine since April 2024, where he studies sickness absence/disability pension policies in Sweden.
Education includes a PhD from the University of Oxford (2016), an MA from UNC Chapel Hill (2006), and a BA from UNC Chapel Hill (2006). He has extensive non-academic experience with the International Longevity Centre UK (2013–2021) and AARP’s International Affairs office (2006–2009), fostering global aging dialogues.
His research interests emphasize socio-structural influences on aging populations, including workplace wellbeing, health inequalities, and policy interventions. Recent work explores pandemic impacts on older adults’ mental health and the role of built environments in reducing social isolation. His projects often bridge epidemiological data with policy recommendations, particularly in EU and UK contexts.
Key contributions include analyses of labor market disparities among older workers, LGBTQ+ aging health disparities, and the intersection of caregiving roles with employment trajectories. Beach’s multilingual capabilities (Swedish, French, Italian, German, Danish) facilitate cross-cultural research collaborations.
