معرفی
Brian Baily is a Senior Lecturer in the School of the Environment and Life Sciences at the University of Portsmouth, Faculty of Science & Health. He holds a PhD in shingle beach mapping and geomorphological analysis from the same institution, completed in 2001. He has been actively involved in academic and research roles since 1995, progressing from Research Associate to Senior Lecturer by 2010. He is currently accepting PhD students and remains a key contributor to coastal and environmental research.
His educational background includes a BSc and PhD in Geography from the University of Portsmouth. He has extensive expertise in GIS, remote sensing, and historical map analysis, applied to coastal and environmental monitoring.
Brian's research interests focus on coastal geomorphology, including salt marsh erosion, tidal line mapping, and land use change. He employs GIS, photogrammetry, and aerial imagery to study coastal dynamics in regions such as southern England, the Niger Delta, and Malta. His work supports environmental management and policy, particularly in the context of climate change and habitat loss.
His recent publications (2020–2024) show a strong trend in environmental risk assessment, flood modeling, and oil spill prediction in developing regions, alongside continued work on coastal change and historical data analysis. His research integrates geospatial techniques with environmental science to address real-world challenges.
- Terrestrial Environmental Sensitivity Index (TESIM) mapping
- Urban flood modeling in developing countries
- Salt marsh and coastal habitat monitoring
- Historical land use data extraction
Brian has secured research funding and collaborated on major projects, including the Solent Blue Carbon Restoration Initiative and historical land use mapping for policy development. He has worked with institutions such as the Environment Agency, National Trust, and Chichester Harbour Conservancy.
He has contributed to interdisciplinary research, including environmental behavior studies and stone erosion monitoring at St. Paul’s Cathedral. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action, life below water, and sustainable cities.
Baily leads research in the Institute of the Earth and Environment, contributing to a collaborative network focused on environmental change and sustainability. His team applies advanced geospatial methods to long-term environmental monitoring and policy-relevant science.
