Brian Ayers is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of History and Art History at the University of East Anglia. His research focuses on medieval history, archaeology, and urban environments, with a particular emphasis on the North Sea region and NW Europe. He has authored books and articles exploring topics such as medieval parish churches, transnational maritime networks, and comparative urban development between Europe and Japan.
Dr. Ayers led the Leverhulme Trust-funded project "The Medieval Parish Churches of Norwich: city, community and architecture" (2014–2017), which examined the role of religious architecture in medieval urban life. His publications include The German Ocean: Medieval Europe around the North Sea (2016) and The Archaeology of Medieval Towns (2020), which highlight cross-cultural exchanges and material culture studies.
His research interests span medieval clerical administration, church archaeology, and the interplay between urbanization and rural environments. Ayers has contributed significantly to understanding medieval Norwich’s architectural heritage and transnational historical connections.
