Brett Potter serves as Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at Huron University College's Faculty of Theology. An interdisciplinary scholar, he explores intersections of religion, beauty, and the arts (theological aesthetics) and human identity (theological anthropology), with emphasis on interreligious dialogue concerning justice, ecology, and creative expression.
His research centers on theological aesthetics through film and visual art, eco-theology examining humanity's place within evolutionary biology and 'deep time,' and science-engaged theology. Current projects investigate incarnational theologies related to sports, nonviolence, and transhumanism, alongside comparative religious ethics and the Canadian religious imagination.
Potter's publications since 2011 reveal evolving engagement from theological aesthetics (particularly Hans Urs von Balthasar studies) toward eco-theology and film studies, culminating in his forthcoming 2024 monograph on ecological catastrophe. His work consistently bridges phenomenology, art theory, and interreligious perspectives.
As an educator, Potter supervises student research in religion and the arts, theological anthropology, and eco-theology. He cultivates inclusive, interdisciplinary classrooms that encourage creativity and interfaith exploration, preparing students to engage global religious traditions within contemporary contexts.
