Dr. Brett Perkison is an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston), with a joint appointment in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He holds roles in the School of Public Health’s Epidemiology department and the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH). His clinical practice focuses on primary care and occupational-related injuries at Bayshore UT Physicians’ clinic one day weekly.
Education: Earned a Biology degree from Texas A&M University, MD from UTMB Galveston, and MPH from UTHealth. Completed residencies in Family Medicine (Baylor College of Medicine) and Occupational and Environmental Medicine (UT School of Public Health). Served as a U.S. Navy General Medical Officer overseas.
Research Interests: Diabetes prevention programs, climate change disaster preparedness (e.g., heat stress and flood recovery), and occupational health for underserved populations. Current projects include a diabetes prevention grant and studies on improving employer/community preparedness for climate-related health challenges.
Awards: Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (FACOEM).
Grants/Projects: Leading the Diabetes Prevention and Control Grant Program to reduce type 2 diabetes risks and enhance care for those with diabetes. Collaborates on initiatives to address occupational medicine in corporate and underserved settings.
