Brett McGuire is an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an Assistant Astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). His research bridges physical chemistry, molecular spectroscopy, and observational astrophysics to investigate how the chemical precursors to life evolve during star and planet formation. Based at 530 McCormick Road, Charlottesville, VA, he leads the McGuire Group, which focuses on interstellar molecular detection through both laboratory experiments and radio telescope observations.
Key research themes include:
- Chemical evolution in dark molecular clouds (e.g., TMC-1) and star-forming regions (e.g., NGC 6334I).
- Developing automation and machine learning tools to analyze complex spectroscopic data.
- Elucidating the role of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and chiral molecules (e.g., propylene oxide) in astrochemical pathways.
His group has published groundbreaking work on benzonitrile (2018), propargyl cyanide (2020), and cyanopyrene isomers (2024), pushing the boundaries of interstellar molecular detection. Brett was recognized in C&EN's 2020 Talented 12 List for his contributions to astrochemistry.
Scientific awards and mentorship include the MIT Chemistry Mentorship Spotlight Award (2023) and the MIT School of Science Infinite Expansion Award (2024) for team members. He actively participates in educational initiatives like the Green Bank Single Dish Summer School and collaborates with institutions such as the Green Bank Telescope and Kavli Foundation.
