Brett Johnson is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Iowa's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He previously taught at the Missouri School of Journalism (2015–2022) and holds a PhD in Mass Communication (2015) from the University of Minnesota and a Juris Doctor (2024) from the University of Iowa College of Law. His research focuses on media law, ethics, sociology, and digital technology’s impact on journalism, with particular attention to hate speech, social media dynamics, and platform responsibilities.
Research Highlights: His work critically examines ethical boundaries in reporting hate movements, the psychological effects of social media on youth, and legal frameworks governing digital speech. Recent studies explore censorship mechanisms on platforms like Facebook and the evolving role of amicus briefs in shaping journalistic discourse.
Academic Leadership: As Director of Undergraduate Studies, he oversees curriculum development and student advising. His teaching integrates legal and ethical dimensions of modern media practices, reflecting his interdisciplinary background in communication and law.
