Brett A. Story is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Southern Methodist University. He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University, specializing in structural engineering and infrastructure monitoring. His academic career spans roles as Assistant Director at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute's Center for Railway Research and Lecturer at Texas A&M's Zachry Department of Civil Engineering before joining SMU in 2013.
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Texas A&M University (2012)
- M.S. in Civil Engineering, Texas A&M University (2007)
- B.S. in Civil Engineering, Texas A&M University (2005)
Dr. Story's research integrates structural mechanics, machine learning, and measurement technologies to advance infrastructure evaluation. His interdisciplinary work extends to archeology, education, and workforce development, with a focus on analytical modeling, experimental sensing, and smart infrastructure techniques. Current projects explore dynamic bridge analysis via vehicular sensors and smartphone-based monitoring systems.
His publications reflect expertise in structural resilience, transportation infrastructure, and technology-driven solutions. Key themes include progressive collapse mitigation, vehicle-structure interaction, and multi-modal sensing, often bridging traditional engineering with computational methods.
- Scientific Awards:
- Golden Mustang Outstanding Faculty Award (2019)
- SMU HOPE Professor Nominee (2019)
- Lyle Outstanding CEE Professor Award (2016)
- Sam Taylor Fellowship (2016, 2014)
Dr. Story has secured funding from the National Science Foundation, industry partners, and local governments. He oversees the Smart Infrastructure Innovation Initiative (S³I), which combines technical research with STEM outreach for high school students from diverse backgrounds.
