Brendan Mcgrath is a Professor and MAHSC Honorary Clinical Chair at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. He is a Consultant in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and leads the National Tracheostomy Safety Project. His roles include NHS England National Clinical Advisor for Tracheostomy and European Lead of the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative. He holds visiting professorships at Harvard Medical School and has been recognized with awards such as the Association of Anaesthetists Innovation Award (2023) and the BMJ Team of the Year (2020).
- Education: MB ChB from the University of Sheffield, specialist training in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine.
- Research Focus: Tracheostomy safety, airway management, patient safety, and quality improvement in critical care.
- Grants: Over £9.4 million in funding since 2014, leading and co-applying for projects.
His research group, MACC, addresses outcomes for critically ill patients through clinical trials and quality improvement initiatives. Key achievements include developing the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative and Bubble-PAPR PPE innovation.
