Brendan McGeever

Dr Brendan McGeever is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Birkbeck, University of London, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Psychosocial Studies. He holds positions as Research Associate at the Birkbeck Institute for the Study of Antisemitism and Department Representative at the Birkbeck Institute for Social Research. His research focuses on racism, antisemitism, Marxism, and the former Soviet Union, with a particular emphasis on their intersections. He earned his PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2015.

McGeever’s work includes the award-winning book Antisemitism and the Russian Revolution (2019), exploring Bolshevik responses to antisemitism during the Russian Revolution, and co-authored Britain in Fragments: Why Things Are Falling Apart (2023). He has collaborated with prominent scholars like Satnam Virdee, examining antisemitism in socialist movements and Brexit’s sociopolitical impacts.

His honors include the 2021 BIAJS Book Prize, the 2020 Reginald Zelnik Prize, and recognition as a 2019 BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker. McGeever teaches modules on racism, antisemitism, class, and social research methods, and supervises PhD students in related areas. He actively engages in media and public discourse through BBC radio appearances and podcasts, addressing topics like antisemitism, Brexit, and Marxist theory.

Key research themes include the sociology of antisemitism, race-class crisis in Brexit Britain, and historical studies of Soviet policies. His work bridges archival research, sociopolitical analysis, and contemporary issues, influencing academic and public debates on racism, class, and revolutionary movements.
