Professor Brendan Mackey is a Professor and Director of the Griffith Climate Action Beacon at Griffith University, Queensland. He holds a PhD in plant ecology from The Australian National University and has over 300 academic publications in climate change, biodiversity, and environmental policy. His roles include serving as a Coordinating Lead Author for the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report (Working Group II) and as a Board Member of the Frank Fenner Foundation. He has held appointments with Griffith's Environmental Futures Research Institute and the Centre for Planetary Health and Food Security.
Research interests span climate change mitigation, forest conservation, and policy, with a focus on ecosystem integrity, biodiversity, and sustainable development goals. Recent work emphasizes the role of primary forests in climate mitigation and reducing climate impacts through policy and innovation. He has contributed to over 300 publications, including high-impact studies on forest degradation, carbon sequestration, and environmental governance.
Prof. Mackey leads funded projects on climate resilience, ecosystem-based adaptation, and sustainable landscapes, collaborating with international organizations like the IUCN and the IPCC. His advising spans doctoral research on topics ranging from humpback whale behavior to climate-resilient urban systems.
Professional activities include board memberships with the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative and advisory roles with Anshun Huangguoshu World Heritage projects. He actively engages with environmental law and policy through memberships in the Ecological Society of Australia and IUCN commissions.
