معرفی
Dr. Olaf Meynecke is a Research Fellow at Griffith University's Environmental Sustainability and Management department within Griffith Sciences. He is currently affiliated with the Cities Research Institute (2018-present) and previously was a member of the Australian Rivers Institute (2008-2017) and the Griffith Centre for Coastal Management (2018-2021).
Dr. Meynecke's research focuses on marine and estuarine ecology, particularly on humpback whale behavior, migration patterns, and responses to environmental changes. His work spans several key areas:
- Marine mammal ecology with emphasis on humpback whales
- Impacts of climate change on marine species distribution
- Effects of vessel traffic and tourism on whale behavior
- Coastal ecosystem management and conservation
- Marine spatial planning and protected area design
- Whale-carbon cycle interactions and climate change mitigation
Analysis of Dr. Meynecke's recent publications reveals a strong focus on humpback whale ecology in Australian waters, particularly along the eastern coast. His research integrates field observations with modeling approaches to understand whale movement patterns, habitat use, and responses to environmental and anthropogenic factors. There is a clear trend toward increasingly sophisticated spatial and temporal analyses of whale behavior, with growing attention to climate change impacts and conservation applications.
Dr. Meynecke has been actively involved in securing research funding and supervising students:
- Current Supervision: Principal supervisor for doctoral research on "Response of Humpback Whales to Climate Drivers in Australia" and "Supplementary feeding patterns of east Australian humpback whales on their southern migration"; Principal supervisor for masters research on "Characterizing male humpback whale competitive behavior"
- Past Supervision: Supervised masters research on humpback whale abundance in the Gold Coast and their use of the Gold Coast bay as a resting and calving ground; Associate supervisor for doctoral research on "Seascape context and Marine Reserves in Seagrass Ecosystems"
Dr. Meynecke has secured multiple research grants, including:
- A2O to H2O: Expand and improve biodiversity monitoring along the Australian coast line (Google USA, 2024-2027)
- Research vessel to support estuarine and coastal research (Griffith University, 2022-2023)
- Healthy Whales - Humpback Whale health assessment (Earthwatch Institute, 2016-2017)
- Coastal Dynamics Mobile Monitoring package (Griffith University, 2012-2013)
- Multi-Probe Water Quality Loggers for Assessing Estuarine Wetland Ecosystem Health (Griffith University, 2011-2012)
As a member of the Cities Research Institute and previously the Australian Rivers Institute, Dr. Meynecke collaborates with interdisciplinary teams focused on coastal and marine environmental management. His work contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals including Climate Action (13), Life Below Water (14), Life on Land (15), and Clean Water and Sanitation (6).
