Brendan Hurley is an Assistant Professor of Geography at George Washington University (GWU) and Director of the Graduate Certificate in GIS. He holds a B.Sc. in Wildlife Science from Virginia Tech, an M.E.M. in Coastal Environmental Management from Duke University, and a Ph.D. in Earth Systems and Geoinformation Sciences from George Mason University. His roles include membership in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the GWU Cancer Center Advisory Task Force.
Research interests focus on spatial clustering theory, decision-making impacts of spatial events, and geospatial applications in conservation. Current projects include analyzing gun violence and social vulnerability in collaboration with Children’s National Hospital. His prior experience includes 15 years in conservation and GIS work, including marine mammal research in the Arctic and right whale conservation in Massachusetts.
Publications span marine turtle conservation frameworks, spatial variogram methodologies, and ecological studies in Arctic ecosystems. He teaches courses like Geospatial Statistics and Techniques of Spatial Analysis. Professional activities include serving on advisory boards and contributing to policy-related geospatial analyses.
