Brenda J. Child holds the Northrop Professorship in American Studies at the University of Minnesota. A leading scholar in American Indian history, her work focuses on Ojibwe communities, indigenous education, and Native American women's labor. Her award-winning books have received recognition including the American Indian Book Award and Best Book in Midwestern History.
Child's research examines boarding school experiences, Ojibwe family life, and the preservation of indigenous communities. Her children's book Bowwow Powwow won the American Indian Youth Literature Award. She has served as president of the Native American & Indigenous Studies Association and contributed to constitutional development for the Red Lake Ojibwe Nation.
