Dr. Brandy Piña-Watson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Texas Tech University, with affiliations in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) and as Associate Director of Women’s & Gender Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University (2014). Her research focuses on resilience mechanisms among Latinx adolescents and emerging adults, particularly Mexican-descent populations, addressing mental health disparities through holistic frameworks integrating cultural, familial, and societal factors. She emphasizes bicultural stress, traditional gender roles, and caregiver relationships as critical variables.
Her clinical interests include crisis intervention, depression, trauma, and identity development, employing multicultural and humanistic therapeutic approaches. Teaching spans undergraduate courses like General Psychology and Developmental Psychology, and graduate courses such as Multicultural Counseling and Supervision. She advises graduate students in counseling psychology, with current advisees including Ashley Martinez and Abigail Cruz.
Dr. Piña-Watson’s research has explored themes like intergenerational acculturation conflict, the role of self-compassion in mitigating suicide risk, and the impact of traditional gender roles on substance use.
