Brandy Burgess serves as Professor and Director of Infection Control at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital within the Department of Population Health, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Clinical Sciences – Epidemiology from Colorado State University (2014)
- Residency in Infection Control & Biosecurity at Colorado State University (2009-2014)
- MSc in Large Animal Clinical Sciences from University of Saskatchewan (2009)
- Residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at University of Saskatchewan (2006-2009)
- Internship in Large Animal Internal Medicine at University of Saskatchewan (2005-2006)
- DVM from Colorado State University (2005)
- BS in Biological Sciences from Montana State University (1996)
Dr. Burgess maintains dual board certification from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal Internal Medicine, 2009) and the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (2014). Her research focuses on pathogen epidemiology, zoonotic disease prevention, and evidence-based risk management strategies in veterinary settings, with particular emphasis on occupational hazards for veterinary personnel and development of open-access epidemiology education tools. She integrates clinical practice with public health initiatives through her infection control leadership role.
She holds the Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity Initiative (ELBI) Fellowship from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2017) alongside teaching certifications from Virginia Tech (2016) and Colorado State University (2015).
Dr. Burgess teaches POPH 5240 – Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine and directs infection control protocols at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, bridging clinical practice, academic instruction, and public health policy development.
