Brandt Attema is a Professor of Trombone at the University of Music Karlsruhe and an International Visiting Tutor in Trombone at the Royal Northern College of Music, part of the University of Manchester. He performs globally as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral bass trombonist with ensembles like the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Slide Monsters (a trombone quartet blending Classical and Jazz), and the New Trombone Collective.
His research interests focus on expanding the repertoire for bass and contra-bass trombone through collaborations with composers, adapting works from other instruments, and experimenting with unconventional pairings such as the first-ever Bass Trombone and Harp duo. He also emphasizes inspiring students to innovate with their instruments and explore creative possibilities in trombone performance.
Previously a member of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra (1999-2019), Attema continues as a freelance musician, collaborating with international orchestras and ensembles. His career highlights include pioneering trombone education and fostering interdisciplinary musical collaborations.
He is associated with the Wind, Brass and Percussion school at Royal Northern College of Music and contributes to trombone pedagogy through commissions, adaptations, and mentorship.
