Brandon Whited

Brandon Whited is an Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Theater & Dance at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His academic roles include teaching modern/contemporary technique, choreography, and performance studies. He holds an MFA from The Ohio State University (as a Distinguished University Fellow) and a BFA from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His work bridges dance, gender studies, and interdisciplinary performance.

Research focuses on masculinities/men’s studies through choreographic practice, including projects like Cipher XY (exploring male/masculine identities) and Boys Like Us (queer coming-of-age narratives). Recent performances include site-specific works in Italy and Baltimore, as well as restaging Shen Wei’s Re-III for UCSB’s faculty concert.

Teaching emphasizes somatic practices, Shen Wei’s Natural Body Development Technique, and integrated partnering methods combining ballet, contact improvisation, and ballroom dance. Collaborations include multi-media installations with visual artists and interdisciplinary performances at venues like the Lobero Theater.

Professional experience includes dancing with Shen Wei Dance Arts (2009–2014), appearances with the Metropolitan Opera, and choreography for theater productions in North Carolina and NYC. His work has been presented at the Rochester Fringe Festival, Ohio Dance Festival, and international touring circuits.
