Melanie Richards is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Dance + Choreography at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCUarts), School of the Arts. She retired after 35 years as a faculty member but continues teaching jazz dance and rhythm tap technique to dance and theater majors. Her career spans performance, choreography, and education with affiliations including Richmond Ballet and global institutions like the University of the Americas in Mexico.
Education: BA and MA in Dance from UCLA. Key achievements include developing study abroad programs in Sicily (Cinema and Dance: Investigating Film and Gesture) and co-creating PALLETTE in Motion, a community engagement project awarded significant grants. She has choreographed over 200 works across modern dance, jazz, and theater, with performances featured in venues like Las Vegas' Sahara Hotel and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Research interests focus on interdisciplinary arts integration, transgenerational collaboration, and the intersection of dance with film/ theater. Awards include multiple grants supporting pedagogy and community programs. She remains active in the arts community through teaching and creative projects.
