Brandon Miller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Massachusetts Boston's College of Liberal Arts. His research focuses on sexual and gender minorities' use of interactive media, examining how this usage affects identity formation, interpersonal relationships, and societal perceptions. He also investigates mass media representations of LGBTQ individuals and issues, with particular emphasis on online self-presentation, linguistic patterns, stereotype formation, and media effects on diverse audiences.
Miller holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Missouri (2016), an MA in Magazine, Newspaper, and Online Journalism from Syracuse University (2008), and a BA in Political Science from Western University (2007). He teaches courses in gender and communication, new media and identity, media and society, communication technologies, and interpersonal communication.
His current research projects explore: masculinity and body image on dating apps for MSM; media as educational tools for reducing transphobia; social connectedness in online queer spaces; mental health portrayals in film; Twitter responses to the Pulse Nightclub shooting; and sexual behavior representation in television programming. Miller serves as secretary for the National Communication Association's Caucus on LGBT Concerns and is a research associate with the Media and Diversity Center at the University of Missouri.
