Brandon M. Erby is an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky's Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies. He holds affiliations with African American and Africana Studies, the Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies, and Social Theory. His research focuses on African American rhetorical traditions, prison studies, literacy education, and political discourse.
Erby earned his Ph.D. in English & African American and Diaspora Studies from Penn State University, along with M.A. degrees from Penn State and Seton Hall University, and a B.A. from Tougaloo College.
His work explores intersections between rhetoric, race, and social justice. Key areas include cultural rhetorics pedagogies, historical analysis of African American survival strategies, and the role of media in preserving civil rights narratives. Notable publications include studies on prison podcasting, Mamie Till-Mobley's activism, and post-Brown v. Board educational institutions.
Erby's 2023 article Imagining Freedom won the 2024 Richard Braddock Award. His scholarship spans rhetorical history, digital literacies, and community-based activism. He contributes to initiatives like the Emmett Till Project and advocates for marginalized voices in academic and public spheres.
