Bradley Elliott is Reader in Ageing Physiology at the University of Westminster, conducting translational research into the biology of ageing with a focus on muscle mass loss mechanisms. His work combines in vitro and in vivo human models to investigate fundamental ageing processes and develop interventions to prevent age-related decline. As an educator, he teaches human physiology, scientific communication, and research methodologies across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Dr. Elliott completed his academic journey with a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, followed by an MSc (Experimental Medicine) at Université Laval, Canada. He earned his doctorate at the University of Westminster, focusing on myostatin regulation and muscle loss mechanisms during hypoxia and high altitude, relevant to mountaineering and diseases like COPD.
His research examines both "normal" ageing processes and outlier populations with unusual ageing trajectories, testing current theories while seeking novel biomarkers. By understanding muscle loss mechanisms during ageing, his work aims to uncover pathways to prevent atrophy and extend healthspan. Recent publications reveal strong focus on muscle physiology, ageing biomarkers, and metabolic health, with particular attention to ketogenic diets, exercise interventions, and sex-specific responses in female populations.
Dr. Elliott has received recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and serves as a trustee of the British Society for Research on Ageing, representing the organization with the Physiological Society and Society for Endocrinology.
He actively supervises doctoral researchers and maintains a robust research group including post-doctoral fellow Dr. Yvoni Kyriakidou, doctoral candidates Isabella Cooper, Jacqueline Leon Ribas, and Noemi Cherestes, supported by research associates Kurtis Edwards and Lucy Petagine. His research is funded through traditional grants, industry partnerships, and private donations, including projects from The Altitude Centre (2023) and Society for Endocrinology (2016).
Dr. Elliott maintains a significant media presence, writing for The Conversation and appearing in documentaries for BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5. His "Different Conversations" podcast series explores diverse topics in science and society, and he regularly contributes to public understanding of exercise physiology, nutrition, and ageing science.
