Brad Hogarth

Brad Hogarth serves as Assistant Professor of Conducting at San Francisco State University while maintaining significant roles across multiple musical institutions. He is Collegiate Wind Ensemble Conductor and Woodwind Chamber Music instructor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM), Music Director of the Juneau Symphony, Associate Conductor of the Monterey Symphony, and Music Director of both Art Haus Collective and the Peninsula Youth Orchestra.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where his principal teachers were Mark Inouye, James Thompson, and Mark Davis Scatterday.

Hogarth's professional work bridges traditional concert settings with innovative performance spaces. His Art Haus Collective gained national recognition when their 2017 Burning Man production of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring was featured in the Smithsonian's exhibit No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man. He believes passionately in the synergy between performance and education, challenging the notion that music educators cannot also be top-tier performers. His teaching philosophy emphasizes crafting "a balanced and creatively fulfilling career," with his favorite advice to students being "Never louder than lovely."

Hogarth maintains an active dual career as both conductor and performer. He has made conducting debuts with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra (2023) and San Francisco Symphony Brass (2022), while continuing to perform as a trumpeter with the San Francisco Symphony, Opera, and Ballet Orchestras. His recordings include work with the San Francisco Symphony on Charles Ives symphonies and the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra's performance of Frankenstein by Lowell Liebermann.

As an educator, he previously served as chair of instrumental music at the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts and taught at Gunma Kokusai Academy in Japan. His upcoming engagements include conducting the SFCM Wind Ensemble in October 2025 featuring works by Michael Tilson Thomas, Shuying Liu, and Percy Grainger.
