Professor Beaven specializes in urban popular culture in Britain during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His research interests include:
- Urban and maritime history
- Port cities and waterfront cultures
- Social and cultural history of working-class communities
- Imperial history and propaganda
- Popular culture and leisure studies
- Sailortown cultures and maritime communities
Beaven's scholarly work reveals consistent themes across his publications, focusing primarily on the intersection of urban spaces, maritime cultures, and social identities. His research demonstrates particular expertise in how port cities functioned as sites of cultural exchange, social conflict, and imperial identity formation. Recent publications show an increasing focus on subaltern perspectives within maritime communities, examining how marginalized groups navigated urban spaces and power structures. The forthcoming 'The Devil's Highway' represents a significant contribution to understanding subaltern cultures in London's Sailortown.
Professor Beaven has made significant contributions to academic publishing as one of the founding editors of the Palgrave series Global Studies in Social and Cultural Maritime History and serves on the board of Sage's Coastal Studies and Society Journal. He has also been appointed to the 'Experts Review College' of the European Science Foundation and served two terms on the AHRC Peer Review College.
As an educator, Beaven teaches on the History BA (Hons) undergraduate course, specializing in popular culture and the city in the era of empire between 1800 and 1939. He also teaches on the MA in Victorian Gothic (DL) and the History Master of Research course. He has successfully supervised over 20 PhD students researching popular culture, urban and maritime history during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and is regularly invited to externally examine PhDs.
