Dr. Guy Collender is a Post Doctoral Senior Research Associate at the University of Portsmouth's Centre for Port Cities and Maritime Cultures, within the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. His research focuses on port cities' complex histories, including industrial relations, port management, trade dynamics, and national/international comparisons. He holds a PhD in History from Birkbeck, University of London (2022), where his thesis examined the Port of London (1900–1939).
His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy, addressing maritime labor safety, transnational labor movements, and coastal urban development. Notable contributions include analyzing the 1889 London Dock Strike and Australian Maritime Strike, and advocating for safer maritime practices through historical precedents. His recent publications explore shipping emissions reduction and neglected seaside towns' political strategies.
Collender collaborates with organizations like the Lloyd's Register Foundation, producing commissioned reports on occupational safety. His research outputs span peer-reviewed journals, book reviews, and public-facing platforms like The Conversation, emphasizing accessibility and real-world policy impact.
