Dr. Mathias Seiter is a Principal Lecturer in History and Associate Head (Academic) at the School of Area Studies, Sociology, History, Politics, and Literature, University of Portsmouth. He joined the university in 2010, previously teaching at the University of Southampton. His academic roles include supervising postgraduate and PhD students in naval, maritime, and coastal history, alongside leading educational initiatives within the faculty.
His research focuses on German and Central European history during the long nineteenth century, emphasizing liminal spaces (e.g., port towns and borderlands), identity formation, and German-Jewish history. Key projects include studies on Jewish minorities in German Empire borderlands and naval port towns' cultural dynamics between 1871–1918. He is affiliated with the Centre for Port Cities and Maritime Cultures, Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR), and the Social and Cultural History cluster.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on modern German and European history, such as 'The Making of the German Nation.' He supervises postgraduate projects for the Distance Learning MA in Naval, Maritime and Coastal History, MA Victorian Gothic, and MRes Humanities and Social Sciences. His PhD supervision spans 19th and early 20th-century German and European history and culture.
Dr. Seiter holds a honorary fellowship at the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations and is a member of the German History Society. His editorial role with the Coastal Studies & Society journal reflects his maritime historical expertise.
