Bożena Karwowska is a Professor in the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia, within the Faculty of Arts. She specializes in Cultural Studies, Gender and Queer Theory, Holocaust Studies, Literature, and Theatre/Film Performance. Her research emphasizes intersections of gender, history, and memory in Eastern European contexts.
Education: MA (Warsaw University, 1977), MA and PhD (University of British Columbia, 1989 and 1995). She has held visiting roles at the University of Warsaw and collaborates with institutions like the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice.
Research focuses on Holocaust literature, post-war migrations, and women’s experiences in exile. Her work analyzes narratives from socio-cultural journals, memoirs, and literary texts, interrogating themes like bodily trauma, historical memory, and cultural hybridity.
Awards include the UBC Killam Prize (1999) and AMS Just Desserts Award (2000). She co-leads the 'Witnessing Auschwitz' program, combining academic research with immersive fieldwork in Poland.
Her publications include monographs like Kobieta-Literatura-Historia and edited volumes on migration and Holocaust memory. She frequently organizes conferences on transcultural studies, spatial narratives, and postcolonial discourse.
