Borjana Mikic is the Rosemary Bradford Hewlett 1940 Professor of Engineering at Smith College, serving as faculty in the Picker Engineering Program. She previously held academic appointments in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia. Her research integrates mechanical engineering principles with orthopaedic biomechanics to study skeletal connective tissue function and regeneration.
- Ph.D., M.A., B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University
Her work examines growth differentiation factor (GDF) deficiencies in murine models, focusing on tendon composition, material properties, and growth plate kinetics. Current studies explore sexual dimorphism in musculoskeletal development and the application of design-thinking to engineering education.
Key awards include the Sherrerd Prize for Distinguished Teaching and American Association of University Women's Selected Professions Fellowship. She has served as director of Smith's Picker Engineering Program and inaugural director of the Sherrerd Center for Teaching and Learning.
