Bohdan Nebesio is an Associate Professor at Brock University's Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta and degrees from the University of Toronto (M.A., B.A.). His research focuses on film history, silent cinema (especially Alexander Dovzhenko), cognitive approaches to film studies, and Eastern European cinemas. Nebesio has authored books such as The Silent Film Trilogy of Alexander Dovzhenko (2017) and co-edited the Historical Dictionary of Ukraine (2013). His work examines Ukrainian film culture, the Panfuturist movement, and Soviet cinema's industrial dynamics.
Teaching areas include film history, classical film theory, popular cinema, and national cinemas. His research bridges historical analysis with theoretical frameworks, emphasizing cognitive narratology and cultural studies. Upcoming projects include an article on Ukrainian-Canadian cinema for a 2025 film festival release.
Key contributions include studies on VUFKU studio operations, Ukrainian avant-garde cinema, and the intersection of film and national identity. His interdisciplinary approach connects film studies with Slavic cultures and transnational cinema practices.
