Bob Hyland

Bob Hyland is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Cincinnati's College of Arts and Sciences, specializing in Environmental Justice, Technical and Professional Writing Pedagogy, and Community Engagement. He has been with the university since 2017, advancing from Assistant Professor Educator to his current position.

Hyland earned his BA (2004) and MA (2006) in English and Professional Writing & Editing from the University of Cincinnati. His educational background is complemented by a Certificate in Community Engagement through the UC Honors Scholars Program.

His research explores how technical communication serves as a tool for environmental advocacy, particularly examining how students develop agency through community-engaged writing practices. Hyland's work bridges environmental science and humanities, with early publications on water quality and more recent focus on sustainability education and equity-minded teaching practices.

Hyland has secured multiple grants including the URS New Faculty Development Award (2017/18), an Interdisciplinary Faculty Team Project for Environmental Justice Curriculum Development (2019-2020), and the Strategic Collaborative Project for SEaS Sustainability Across the Curriculum (2025).
