Bo Wah Leung

Bo Wah Leung serves as Professor in the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts at The Education University of Hong Kong and Executive Director of the Research Centre for Transmission of Cantonese Opera. He concurrently holds Adjunct Professor positions at three Chinese universities and previously served as Visiting Professor at the University of Washington (2018). His international leadership includes Presidency of the International Society for Music Education (ISME 2022-24) and Chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research (APSMER).

His research centers on music education with specialized focus on Cantonese Opera transmission, traditional music preservation, and arts education policy across Asia-Pacific contexts. He pioneered the award-winning "Collaborative Project on Teaching Cantonese Opera in Schools" which established frameworks for integrating intangible cultural heritage into formal education systems. His scholarly approach emphasizes cross-cultural dialogue and community-based pedagogy in traditional arts transmission.

Professor Leung's recognition includes:

His extensive service within ISME since 1996 encompasses three Board Member terms (2004-06, 2012-14 as Executive Board, 2014-16), co-editorship of the International Journal of Music Education (2012-18), and commission leadership for MISTEC and the Research Commission. He founded the Asia-Pacific Journal for Arts Education and edited significant volumes including "Traditional Musics in the Modern World" (Springer 2018) and "Creative Arts in Education and Culture: Perspectives from Greater China" (Springer 2013).

Through the Research Centre for Transmission of Cantonese Opera, he directs multinational collaborations preserving intangible cultural heritage via school partnerships, teacher training, and digital archiving initiatives that bridge academic research with community practice.
