Hedy Law

Hedy Law is the Acting Director and Associate Professor of Musicology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) School of Music. She holds a Ph.D. in Music Theory and History from the University of Chicago (2007) and has established herself as a leading scholar in multiple areas of musicology including eighteenth-century French music, Cantonese opera, and global music history.

Her research interests span a diverse range of topics including eighteenth-century French spectacles (opera, ballet, pantomime), the French Enlightenment, gender studies, Cantonese opera and music, Chinese immigrants in the Pacific Northwest Region, and global music history. Her book Music, Pantomime and Freedom in Enlightenment France was published by Boydell in 2020, establishing her expertise in French musical culture of the Enlightenment period.

Dr. Law's recent scholarly output demonstrates a growing focus on Asian diaspora music studies, particularly examining Chinese immigrant musical traditions in North America. Her upcoming presentations and publications explore Cantonese opera traditions, Muk'yu Ge (Wooden-Fish Song), and the musical heritage of Chinese immigrants in Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest.

Dr. Law has served in numerous leadership roles including as Graduate Advisor and Associate Director, Graduate at UBC (2022-2024), member of the Board of Trustees of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver (2021-2024), and co-convenor of the American Musicological Society Global Music History Study Group. Since 2023, she has chaired the Fellowship Committee of the American Musicological Society and currently serves as Chair of the Arts Curriculum Committee at UBC.
