Dr. Bo Tang is a Professor of Architecture and Co-Director of the Architecture of Rapid Change and Scarce Resources (ARCSR) research group at London Metropolitan University's Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design. She holds a PhD from the university, completed under a Water Trust scholarship, and has taught architecture since 2006. Her research focuses on collaborative architectural practices in informal settlements across India, Nepal, Sierra Leone, and Greece, emphasizing bottom-up city-making and community empowerment.
Education: BArch from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University of East London, and London Metropolitan University (2008), PhD in Architecture (2014). Awards include shortlists for the RIBA President’s Medal (2014), National Urban Water Awards (2010), and recognition for her co-edited works like Learning from Delhi (2010 Urban Design Group Prize). Her work spans live projects, disaster recovery (e.g., post-earthquake Kathmandu), and educational initiatives like Freetown’s first free architecture school.
Research engages urban informality through participatory design, with notable projects like sanitation upgrades in Agra and quarry classrooms in Navi Mumbai. Teaching includes unit leadership for RIBA-accredited programs and a focus on hands-on making. Grants include Erasmus+ funding for CAMP: Athens (2022).
