Björn Norlin is an Associate Professor of History and Education and Senior Lecturer in Education at Umeå University's Department of Education. He holds dual affiliations within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, serving as Director of its Doctoral College and Deputy Scientific Leader of the Postgraduate School in Educational Sciences. As an Arctic Five Chair, his work focuses on northern educational challenges. He edits the Nordic Journal of Educational History (NJEDH) and leads research projects on minority education, particularly Sami children's schooling in 19th century Sápmi.
His research interests span history of education, didactics, teacher education in Arctic regions, and reconciliation processes involving historical injustices. He explores how educational histories inform contemporary issues like minority rights and climate adaptation.
Recent work emphasizes Arctic teacher education futures, international research collaborations, and the role of truth commissions in addressing historical educational inequities. He has secured Swedish Research Council funding for projects examining Arctic academic networks and indigenous knowledge systems.
