Bjorn Heile is a Professor of Music (post-1900) at the University of Glasgow. He holds a MA from the Technische Universität Berlin and a PhD from the University of Southampton (2001). He has held roles at the University of Sussex and was a Visiting Professor at the Université de Côte d'Azur (Nice). His academic journey includes a Leverhulme Special Research Fellowship (2001) and leadership of major research projects funded by the AHRC, British Academy, and Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Research Interests: He focuses on 20th/21st-century music, including experimental music theatre, musical modernism, jazz studies, and embodied cognition. His work bridges performance practices, global music history, and interdisciplinary approaches to musicology.
Key Projects: Directed AHRC-funded projects on jazz historiography (2010–11) and Kagel's legacy (2013–14). Currently leads the Royal Society of Edinburgh-funded 'Somatic Musicology' research network (2020–22).
Publications: Authored The Music of Mauricio Kagel (2006), edited volumes like Watching Jazz (2016), and contributed to over 90 scholarly works. His 2024 book Musical Modernism in Global Perspective redefines modernist studies through cosmopolitan lenses.
Professional Roles: Editor of Tempo (2024), contributor to Grove Music Online, and reviewer for leading journals. His research integrates musicology with performance studies, cognitive science, and global cultural analysis.
