Bitte Modin is a Professor of Medical Sociology at Stockholm University's Department of Public Health Sciences and Director of the Centre for Health Equity Studies (CHESS). She also serves as Director of Doctoral Studies in Public Health. Her research focuses on social disadvantage in childhood and its implications for health across generations, with a particular emphasis on how educational opportunities and school environments influence mental well-being in youth. Key research areas include intergenerational health inequalities and the role of school contexts in shaping stress and mental health outcomes. Current projects explore teacher-rated school conditions (e.g., leadership, collegial collaboration) linked to student health and generational transmission of social and health disparities through studies like RELINK. Her work bridges sociology and public health to address systemic health inequities.
- Affiliations: CHESS (Centre for Health Equity Studies), Department of Public Health Sciences
- Key Projects: RELINK program on intergenerational social and health inequalities
Her research integrates life course perspectives with structural and individual-level factors, analyzing how early social exposures translate into long-term health outcomes. Ongoing studies investigate historical cohorts (e.g., children of individuals born out of wedlock) to trace multi-generational health trajectories.
