Bishoy Morris Faltas, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, where he serves as Chief Research Officer of the Englander Institute for Precision Medicine and Director of Bladder Cancer Research. His work bridges clinical oncology and basic science, focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms driving cancer evolution, particularly in urothelial carcinoma. Dr. Faltas holds the prestigious Gellert Family-John P. Leonard, MD Research Scholar title and leads multiple research initiatives exploring cancer genomics and precision medicine approaches.
Dr. Faltas' research interests center on the role of APOBEC3 cytidine deaminases in driving genomic instability, clonal evolution, and drug resistance in bladder cancer. His laboratory investigates how APOBEC3-induced mutagenesis promotes tumor progression and treatment resistance, with particular focus on extrachromosomal DNA, intra-tumor heterogeneity, and metastasis. His lab has developed innovative models including transgenic animals and patient-derived xenografts and organoids to study these mechanisms. Current projects include understanding the role of extrachromosomal DNA in cancer evolution, APOBEC3 in metastatic spread, and developing bio-digital twins for precision cancer therapy.
Dr. Faltas' publications reveal a strong focus on cancer evolution, genomic instability, and precision medicine. His most recent work emphasizes the interplay between mutagenesis and extrachromosomal DNA in shaping urothelial cancer evolution, novel approaches to liquid biopsy and circulating tumor DNA analysis, and innovative clinical trials like CLONEVO that target cell cycle inhibition to prevent cancer evolution. His research spans basic molecular mechanisms, translational applications, and clinical implementation.
His scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous awards including the ASCO Young Investigator Award (2015), AACR NextGen Star Award (2017), ASCI Young Physician-Scientist Award (2023), and the prestigious R37 MERIT award from the National Cancer Institute (2023). He is also the recipient of the Department of Defense Career Development Award and the Irma T. Hirschl and Monique Weill-Caulier Research Award.
As a dedicated mentor, Dr. Faltas leads a large research team comprising postdoctoral associates, medical students, research technicians, and clinical fellows. He serves as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH and foundation-funded grants, including an NCI R37 MERIT award, Department of Defense funding, and support from the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network. His CLONEVO clinical trial investigates neoadjuvant abemaciclib to target the evolution of urothelial cancer. Dr. Faltas also maintains an active clinical practice in the Genitourinary Oncology Program at Weill Cornell Medicine, specializing in bladder cancer and other urological malignancies.
